Alright guys, here comes my first legit blog post so we’ll see how I do. :P
So what I what I was hoping to go over today is “What is Indie Rock?”
For some of you I have no doubt that you are avid indie fans like me, but others I am sure had no idea that this genre of music even existed. In this blog I am hoping bridge the gap between those two groups.
So first I’ll talk about, what exactly is “Indie”, what does the title mean?
“Indie” is short for independent, as in bands that are independent by themselves and that their music is 100% their own.
You may read this and think, isn’t every musician “indie" then?
No.
You see, there is a wave going through the music industry known as pop music, ever heard of it? Of course you have, it’s all that music they play on B101 or Z103 or those other pop-music stations. “Music that you can dance to”
This music is exactly what indie is not.
Basically you can separate all music in the world into either the pop category or the indie category.
What makes pop different than indie? It’s not cause it’s “dance music”, there is dance-indie music. The big difference is how their music is produced.
This may come to a shock to some of you, but all those big artists you hear on the pop stations of the radio didn’t actually write their own music. You see, there are three major record labels in North America , and if you can sing, and sometimes even if you just look good, they will sign you to a record deal. But, in this deal, those record companies actually use mathematical equations to find a beat/sound for a song that is danceable and will sound pleasant to the ear. This may sound ridiculous to you, but it’s true, this may disgust many people, but music is math, it’s the variations in sound waves, and with math you can find the optimum mix of frequencies. Unfortunately this means that people like Lady Gaga, The Black Eyed Peas and Down With Webster aren’t really writing their own music. Now, to further perhaps ruin your opinions on modern pop stars, you know those lyrics that are all so catchy? You know, like the songs that repeat lines like “Imma Be” or “I’m so Whoa” over and over again? Pure music genius right? Well those lyrics were not even written by those groups. These three big record companies have professional song writers, these writers receive ideas from the band, and the beat from the record companies mathematicians, mix it together, and put out another chart toping dance song with the same constant bass beat as all those before it.
Now let me make one thing very clear though, pop artists are still talented, they can sing much better than most people in the world, but I just criticize their creativity.
You see, in indie music you find artists who write every single one of their songs, it’s what they want; it has all the raw emotion of the writer because the writer is singing it. So what if this music doesn’t fit the mathematical formula, I believe it is better because it is actually the song of the band, not of its record company. Independent record companies assist a band in recording, tell them what they like and don’t like. But they never write the band’s music for them.
My blog however will be focussing on the largest sub-genre of indie, which is indie rock. Over this semester I will be helping expose you to some of the most underrated artists and groups in music today.
I hope you all stay tuned and keep following, and I hope I give you a different perspective on today’s music industry.
That’s all for now, how did I do for my first time blogging? :P
Jon
Wow! Nicely done Jon! I'm looking forward to reading your blog. I'm a big music fan but I'll bet most of this music will be new to me. I thought "Down with Webster" was an indie band?" My nephew is a horn player for them. You didn't mention why indie and pop do what they do. Isn't Indie all about the Art, and POP all about making money? And can Indie bands become pop bands and viec versa?
ReplyDeleteI love this! Our first blog posts have similar ideas; I completely agree with the lack of creativity found in mainstream music and find it repetitive and annoying. Furthermore I agree that the raw emotion factor that is found in the true emotion of the writer is what makes a song so great; and that is one of the main things missing from most pop songs. I'm excited to broaden my taste in music by listening to the bands you talk about, can't wait to read more.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your blog! I thought that "Indie" stood for Indian music :P I had no idea what it actually meant. I agree that the lack of creativity in pop music is not a good thing. Even here it seems like - even in music - money is the most important! Thanks for teaching me something I had no idea about. I enjoyed seeing you mention that music is math, but I didn't realize how math is being used in pop music. I'm a huge music fan; I look forward to reading more! :)
ReplyDeleteto Tom Johnson, I'm hoping I can answer a couple of your questions here. Yes, Down With Webster did used to be an indie band, but with the release of their latest album they have turned to pop music. So this I guess answers the later question about if bands can go back and forth. I will explain more about this in a later blog. Also yes, that is a good point and exactly right, Pop=Money and Indie=Art
ReplyDeleteSo I just have a question, is a band Indie if they play the music they wrote but it changes when they climb the corporate ladder and enter main stream media or when they start to produce music that is what the companies want them too? PS this was very interesting to read!
ReplyDeleteto danica, a band is indie as long as it is not having others write either lyrics or music. Many indie bands will play previously wrote songs but credit it as a "cover". And a band dosn't have to turn from indie to pop when it enters mainstream. The problem is that many do, those bands are ones that don't care as much about the music and are more in it for money and fame, they don't care how their music is produced. Then again, bands don't have to go pop in order to gain mainstream success. I will be discussing this in a later post, but some examples of indie success are Red Hot Chili Peppers, Our Lady Peace and Green Day. All three of these bands are mainstream yet no one is telling them what to do, they are the creative minds behind their own work.
ReplyDeleteThis post is incredible! First of all, I like how you distinguished between indie music and the other type: pop. While I have been caught singing along to songs on B101 in the past, I would say that I have a predominant interest in music of the indie variety. I agree with you & Shannon in your opinion that pop music has a serious shortage of creativity, emotion, and truth. While pop music can be fun to dance to and easy to sing along, as the lyrics are repatative, I can’t say that I relate to any of the songs produced under this category; in fact sometimes I have a hard enough time trying to figure out what the lyrics are, before I can seek reality in them.
ReplyDeleteI have a few questions:
1.I really like a band called “Keane”. Have you heard of them? If so, are they indie?
2.If music is only classified as “Indie” or “Pop”, what category to past artists such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, etc… fit under. I believe that they wrote much of the music they performed, but it was also music which was frequently danced to.
PS. I really enjoy your Music of the Week column. Brilliant idea!
Just a question, if indie is an artist or group who writes their own music, isn't the term indie like really really broad. It just seems wierd that by that definition there are a lot of bands that are indie, can I get some clarification? if metal bands for example, write their own music are they indie? Your blog's awesome by the way.
ReplyDeletehaha, yes, by definition most, actually, almost all bands are indie. But the devistating thing is that most of these bands don`t get the exposure that the mainstream artists do when signed to one of the major record companies. It is much harder to make a living as an indie artist and even harder than that to even really get noticed. So really, this blog is to hopefully get people to turn off the garbage on B101 and Z103.5 and see that there is so much more music out there :)
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, indie comes in all styles, metal, country, folk, rap and many more. That`s why I chose to focus on indie rock, since the title of indie alone is an imense topic.
I was actually planning on doing a couple reviews on different genres soon, so keep checking in for those :)
Did that kind of answer your questions?
